ATLANTA, February 9, 1997 - Today UPLINK Security became the
first application to generate commercial revenue
through BellSouth's new data transport technology,
Cellemetry (SM). "We are very pleased to be the first
application using Cellemetry to generate revenue using it,"
said John Collings, chief executive officer of UPLINK. "We
chose to use Cellemetry Service to implement our technology
because it was developed by an organization experienced in
the wireless data and cellular arenas and owns its own
cellular networks. Its stand-alone, two-way monitoring
capability and multiple server sites provide a reliable and
cost-effective forum for the exchange of information,
providing the best wireless data transmission capabilities."
"We are working closely with a number of partners to
aggressively deploy Cellemetry for a number of specific
business applications," said Ed Reynolds, president of
BellSouth Wireless Inc., the BellSouth unit which developed
and markets Cellemetry.
With Cellemetry, cellular carriers can offer two-way,
real-time wireless services over existing cellular networks.
Cellemetry sends very short messages-bursts of information
up to 32 bits in length-using what is known as the control
channel. Control channels are the communications channels
used to exchange information, including mobile
identification and electronic serial numbers that allows
cellular customers to make and receive phone calls.
Cellemetry uses these same channels, automatically inserting
a vending machine reading, inventory reading, meter reading,
alarm status report or other message in place of the
electronic serial number.
Since the introduction of Cellemetry Service in early 1996,
BellSouth has signed contracts to provide Cellemetry with
carriers in North America representing approximately 100
million POPs. Carriers include BellSouth Cellular Corp.,
Bell Mobility (Canada), CommNet, US WEST NewVector Group,
and Vanguard Cellular.
UPLINK Security Inc. based in Atlanta is the system
administrator utilizing Cellemetry Data Service for the
wireless transport of life safety alarm signals from fixed
locations. UPLINK is the first Cellemetry application
developer to bring its commercial service to the market.
BellSouth is a $19 billion communications services company.
It provides telecommunications, wireless communications,
directory advertising and publishing, video, Internet and
information services to more than 28 million customers in 20
countries worldwide.
